Background of the Study
Self-employment has become a critical pathway to economic empowerment for women in many parts of Nigeria. In Sanga Local Government Area, Kaduna State, vocational education is playing an increasingly important role in equipping women with the skills necessary for launching their own businesses (Okoro, 2023). Through tailored training programs in areas such as cosmetology, tailoring, and small-scale agribusiness, vocational education provides a practical alternative to formal employment, fostering self-reliance and entrepreneurship among women (Adebayo, 2024). The incorporation of vocational curricula that emphasize both technical and entrepreneurial skills has created opportunities for women to transform their ideas into viable income-generating ventures.
Local government initiatives and support from non-governmental organizations have further strengthened vocational programs in Sanga, ensuring that training is accessible to women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds (Bello, 2025). These initiatives are designed to address not only the skills gap but also the socio-cultural barriers that traditionally limit women's economic participation. By creating an enabling environment that includes mentorship, micro-credit schemes, and market linkages, vocational education has become a cornerstone in the drive towards self-employment for women in the area (Ibrahim, 2023).
The hands-on nature of vocational training allows participants to gain immediate practical experience, which is crucial in building confidence and competence in managing small businesses. This experiential learning approach is complemented by theoretical modules that cover basic business management, financial literacy, and marketing strategies, ensuring that women are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship (Chukwu, 2024). Despite these advances, challenges such as limited access to modern equipment, sporadic training updates, and cultural resistance remain prevalent, hindering the full potential of vocational education to stimulate self-employment among women (Okoro, 2023). Consequently, this study seeks to critically analyze the role of vocational education in promoting self-employment among women in Sanga LGA, with the aim of identifying strategies to optimize these programs for maximum impact (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
In Sanga Local Government Area, while vocational education programs have been introduced to promote self-employment among women, the translation of acquired skills into successful entrepreneurial ventures has not been fully realized. Many women who complete these programs face significant challenges when attempting to start their own businesses, primarily due to inadequate access to capital, limited market information, and insufficient post-training support (Bello, 2025). Furthermore, infrastructural deficiencies and outdated training facilities contribute to a gap between the skills taught and the current demands of the marketplace (Ibrahim, 2023).
Socio-cultural barriers also play a critical role in inhibiting women’s ability to become self-employed. Traditional gender roles and a lack of supportive family structures often discourage women from pursuing entrepreneurial activities, even when they have received vocational training (Chukwu, 2024). The absence of a structured framework for ongoing mentorship and business development further exacerbates the situation, leaving many female graduates without the necessary guidance to sustain their ventures. As a result, the potential of vocational education to serve as a catalyst for self-employment remains underutilized. This study aims to identify the specific challenges that hinder the effective conversion of vocational training into self-employment opportunities for women in Sanga LGA and to propose strategies that can bridge this gap, thereby fostering greater economic independence among women (Okoro, 2023).
